Drimoleague’s long running custom of holding a festival on the May Bank holiday weekend will fly to new heights this year with the Drimoleague Wild Duck Festival
There is only one other place in the world where such a duck hunting festival is held and that is in Trumann, Arkansas USA.
The Drimoleague festival will go in the opposite direction, however, as they celebrate the good work of the Ilen Valley Game Protection Association in breeding and protecting wild ducks in a pond north of Drimoleague. For walkers on the Drimoleague Walkways the wild ducks can be seen lifting, circling, and landing on the still waters of the man-made pond at Rockmount.
Everything about this festival will have a wild duck side to it, from duck eggs on sale at the country market on Saturday to the 5K race on the Monday evening.
Highlights will include a remarkable trad nua band ‘Na Fianna’ on stage on Sunday and the Saturday night pageant on the streets when people will dress up in 1916 costumes.
Five walks (or waddles if you wish) are planned for the weekend starting with the night light walk on late Friday evening. Car lovers in teams of Moscovy, Aylesbury and Indian Runners will be participating in the Sunday morning vintage run and the Monday afternoon car treasure hunt.
For a festival of its size the word is that ‘the quack will be mighty’. So get all your ducks in a row and make sure to touch down at Drimoleague for Ireland’s one and only WILD DUCK FESTIVAL this May Bank holiday weekend.
“All are welcome” say the organisers “except Mr Fox”.
