Ahakista is hosting some wonderful events as part of the Taste of West Cork Festival 2016!

The little village on the Sheep’s Head peninsula is a gorgeous place to taste some of the loveliest food West Cork has to offer.

16th September

Evening Classical Concert with the Evelyn Grant Quartet

8pm St. Patrick’s Church, Ahakista.

This will be an evening of delightful classical music presented by Evelyn Grant (RTÉ Lyric Fm) and her Ensemble with proceeds going to St. Patrick’s Church and Rusnacahara National School. Why not book a pre-concert dinner at Arundel’s By the Pier to complete your evening?

17th September

Day Sail on Merlin

Board Carbery Sailing’s beautiful luxurious ocean going yacht ‘Merlin’ for a day, sailing around Bere Island. While taking in the breathtaking view of West Cork from the water and listening to the wind in the sails, indulge in a Taste of West Cork lunch – Ummera smoked organic salmon, homemade brown bread and soup, and Durrus Cheese, served with warming coffee and tea.

On return to land, recall the wonders of the day spent on the open water over a four-course dinner at Arundel’s by the Pier at 8.00pm.

Sheep’s Head Producers’ Market

11am-1pm Arundel’s By the Pier, Ahakista
The Sheep’s Head is famous as a place where people are inspired to make great food and produce beautiful crafts. The Sheep’s Head producers, who have a shop in Kilcrohane, will set up their market in Ahakista at Arundel’s by the Pier as part of the Taste of West Cork Festival 2016.

There will be a wonderful selection of hand-made crafts and artisan foods on offer, all created locally and inspired by the beautiful surroundings of the Sheep’s Head peninsula. This event makes for an ideal family day out as there is a children’s playground with dining area adjacent to the venue and Beer Garden with spectacular views across Kitchen Cove at Dunmanus Bay.

Guided Walk on the Sheep’s Head Way

11:30am-2:00pm Meet at The Cabin, Ahakista |Registration at 11.30am | Walk will commence at 12.00 | Walk length: 2.5 hours

Charlie McCarthy of Hillside Walking Tours will give a guided walk along one of Ireland’s most dramatic coastlines – the Sheep’s Head Way.
During the walk, Charlie will share his extensive local knowledge of the area and the historical sites along the way. This is a great day out for all the family. Please bring suitable footwear and a rain jacket in case the weather turns against us!

Children’s Baking Competition and Coffee Morning

Hosted by the Ahakista Community Association
11am-1pm The Cabin, Ahakista
The Ahakista Community Association will host a fundraising coffee morning in the Cabin. Children of all ages are invited to enter into the baking competition where prizes will be awarded for the best decorated fairy cake, the most delicious chocolate brownies, and the most fabulous flapjacks!

Cookery Demonstration – Francine Thurnheer of Coolagh Bakes

12:30pm-1:30pm, Arundel’s By The Pier

Francine Thurnheer opened Coolagh Bakes, based in Ballydehob, eighteen months ago. Francine has worked in the catering industry since she was 16 and has always had a passion for baking. Francine has quickly established a reputation of excellence, with her wheat and spelt breads, scones and irresistible cakes. She now supplies shops, restaurants and private parties in the area.

Stone-Carving Demonstration

1pm-2pm, Arundel’s by the Pier

Enjoy a stone-carving demonstration by local carver Victor Daly. Victor is a time served stone-cutter, with over 20 years’ experience of stone-working in Ireland and abroad, and runs regular workshops in his workshop on the Sheep’s Head peninsula.

A Taste of West Cork – French-Style!

Arundel’s is showcasing local produce French-style in a 5-course menu with a complimentary drinks reception on arrival.
A culinary delight for all food lovers! Enjoy th fantastic French-themed menu designed by Dominique Carrucci, Head Chef at Arundel’s by the Pier. Dominique will use the finest of local ingredients from the sea and the land.
