Durrus Cheese

January 3, 2014 by Dunmanus

Durrus Cheese has been made in the upland valley of Coomkeen since the late seventies. It all started as an experiment in cheese-making for the family in the farmhouse kitchen.

This proved to be a lifestyle choice and soon Jeffa Gill was producing the now well-known cheese which is sold all across Ireland and into the UK and the USA.

Durrus is a semi-soft cheese with a natural washed rind, which takes the name of the nearby Durrus village. Having started the business using milk from her own small herd of cows Jeffa eventually began working with milk from two top quality local herds and has developed this distinctive range of cheeses from cows grazing on nearby pastures, some of which border Dunmanus Bay with its dramatic landscape and salt drenched land.

Jeffa and her team in Coomkeen currently produce four award-winning cheeses. The original standard in large and small wheels, our smallest the Durrus Óg and the Dunmanus, a large wheel, matured for at least 6 months with a firmer texture.

Durrus Cheese is well known for being one of the original raw milk Irish farmhouse cheeses. We now make pasteurised versions throughout the year and our raw milk cheeses are made in the summer months when the cows are on pasture.

The Coomkeen Loop walk is a lovely way to explore the Sheep’s Head Way walking trail and it passes the Durrus farm.

Sheep’s Head Way

January 2, 2014 by Dunmanus

The Sheep’s Head Way walking route has a worldwide reputation as Ireland’s best-loved coastal walking trail

The West Cork walking trail traces the coastline of the Sheep’s Head peninsula – its beauty enhanced by the magnificent views it offers across Bantry and Dunmanus bays.

Whether you walk the whole 88km hiking route along the West Cork stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way, or choose one of the 20 loop walks on offer, you’ll be captivated by the unspoilt beauty of the Sheep’s Head Way.

The walking trails begin in the historic West Cork market town of Bantry. The main route passes through breathtaking, unspoilt scenery including high ridges up to 365 metres, coastal paths, small roads and boreens. It also takes in the lovely coastal villages of Durrus, Ahakista, and Kilcrohane.

As you walk the route, enjoy views across the West Cork islands, and our neighbouring Mizen and Beara peninsulas.

These fabulous West Cork walking routes are clearly marked and are accessible to anyone with basic levels of experience and fitness.

Way-marked loop walks along the Sheep’s Head Way provide shorter walking trails suitable for easier one-day excursions. Additional routes extend the Sheep’s Head Way eastwards to Drimoleague and Kealkill and onto the Mizen at Mount Corrin, south-west of Durrus.

Bantry Bay Pony Trekking

November 25, 2013 by Dunmanus

Bantry Bay Pony Trekking

Enjoy pony trekking in Bantry and take in fantastic views over West Cork’s bays and hills

Enjoy breathtaking scenery on a pony trekking trail ride through ancient forest to Maggie Murphy’s cottage on Hollyhill, just 5 minutes from Bantry.

One of our 20 ponies and horses will look after you as we ride along well-maintained private bridle paths. Children and adults, beginners and advanced riders, young and old, all are welcome.

We provide safety hats and back protectors and one of our experienced helpers will walk with you if you’re not used to horses.

Riding in small groups of no more than six means that you will receive our careful attention. There’s no traffic to worry about either when you’re pony trekking, just plenty of time to enjoy the ride through the ancient Deerpark forest, once part of the Bantry Estate.

We climb gently above the tree line where the hand-built paths cross heather and gorse hillside. More advanced riders can enjoy a canter while the less adventurous enjoy the scenery. Bring your camera because when we reach Maggie Murphy’s cottage there are wonderful views down Bantry and Dunmanus Bays.

Many of our visitors return time and again. We have a Horse Sport Ireland Level One coach on staff, and if you need some riding tips we can even arrange lessons in one of our purpose-built all-weather arenas.

All of this within easy reach of the bustling harbour town of Bantry, and the tracks and trails of the Sheep’s Head peninsula: a European Destination of Excellence! Pony trekking is a wonderful thing to do while you’re paying a visit to beautiful West Cork.
