Farranamanagh Loop Walk | Sheep’s Head Way

February 3, 2014 by Dunmanus

The Farranamanagh loop walk is a coastal trail that leads you from Kilcrohane village out along the edge of the Sheep’s Head peninsula

From The Old Creamery in Kilcrohane, walk in a northeasterly direction back up the peninsula following the red arrows and main Sheep’s Head Way ‘yellow man’ markers.

At marker no. 404, turn right off the main public road entering farmland. Continue on downhill to Farranamanagh strand and lake, walking beyond these and on uphill on rough ground beyond the Bardic School.

Farranamanagh loop walkThe school was home to O Dalys – chief poets to the O Mahony clan – and it was here on the coast of the Sheep’s Head peninsula that they passed the Irish poetic tradition from generation to generation.

Continue on to meet the main public road, turn left and you will arrive at Dromnea car park, way marker no. 425.

Here you can return directly to Kilcrohane village via the public road or continue on the loop by climbing the old stone stile to the left of the gate across the road.

Continue on uphill until you reach way marker no. 92 on the old Kilcrohane/Ahakista road. Continue straight on again until you reach way marker no. 01, veer left here for Kilcrohane, and continue on again in a southwesterly direction.

At way marker no. 10 follow the road down until you meet the main road. Take a right turn here and the main road will lead you back to Kilcrohane village, where a bite to eat at The Old Creamery will be a welcome reward for your walk!

The Farranamanagh Loop Walk is one of 20 loop walks along the Sheep’s Head Way Walking route on Ireland’s southwest coastline.

The Funeral Path Loop Walk from Kilcrohane forms part of the Sheep’s Head Way walking route

From the map board, walk in a southwesterly direction, passing the Bay View Bar on your left. You’ll find the Sheep’s Head Way ‘yellow man’ and funeral path finger post sign on the wall beyond O’Mahony’s shop which will point left (to the Paddock).

Continue on the roadway until you turn right up a stone step over and off the road passing way marker no. 402 along the way. Continue along through farm land until you will cross the public road and over a stone bridge at way marker no. 398 and on through farm land again.

At way marker 394, you will step over a stone stile and onto the road again. Continue along until way marker no. 392 and go off road. Follow the main Sheep’s Head Man West ‘yellow man’ poles passing by a stony strand known locally as “Trá Beag” (the small beach) until you reach a farm gate and cattle grid at way marker no. 382.

At this point you will see the main public road in front of you. Here, turn right and return to Kilcrohane village via the public roadway.

February 3, 2014 by Dunmanus

The Peakeen Ridge Loop Walk begins above Kilcrohane on West Cork’s Sheep’s Head peninsula

It’s a gorgeous walk out along the ridge of the Sheep’s Head. At every time of year, you’ll find something to delight the eye as you look across bays, moorland and lush green valleys. The walk is a perfect introduction to Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way walks!

Look out for a passage tomb and a Mass Rock along your route. Why not call down to the village of Kilcrohane after your walk for dinner at The Old Creamery, or a visit to the Sheep’s Head Producer’s Shop?

Black Gate: Alice West Centre & Café

January 4, 2014 by Dunmanus

Alice West Centre - Black Gate

The café, art gallery and butter house museum at the Black Gate in Kilcrohane celebrates the crafts, history, and walks of the Sheep’s Head peninsula

The old butter house building at the Black Gate dates from the 1890s. It was once a busy trading centre for the people from the north and west of the peninsula who were able to sell home-produced butter and eggs there.

In 1968, English-born artist Alice West bought and restored the building as a rural craft museum. For many years, the Black Gate museum outside Kilcrohane served as her home, but it was also open to the public. Alice was an enthusiastic patron of traditional music and a mentor to young people who Alice encouraged to learn craft skills in her basement workshop.

On her death, Alice West bequeathed the Black Gate to the community. Today, many of her paintings, and examples from her collection of rural antiquities are on display in the recently-renovated building.

The Sheep’s Head peninsula in West Cork is home to the Sheep’s Head Way walking route, spectacular scenery and unspoilt countryside. The Alice West Centre at the Black Gate is ideally situated as part of your walk or driving tour whilst also being a worthwhile destination in itself.

Call in for tea, coffee, snacks and Wi-Fi. With outstanding views across Dunmanus Bay, the Alice West Centre provides a welcoming venue to visitors and locals alike. Regular events include storytelling, traditional dancing and craft demonstrations.

Sheep’s Head Producers’ Shop

December 18, 2013 by Dunmanus

Are you looking for art, crafts and artisan food that have been imagined, created and grown by people living in one of Ireland’s most remote communities?

Then look no further than the Sheep’s Head Producers’ Shop in Kilcrohane village. At the shop you’ll find ‘everything from paintings to potatoes’, all produced here on the Sheep’s Head peninsula.

We offer visitors an ever-changing range of local food, produce, plants, baking, hand-made crafts and art. There’s a treasure trove of items from ceramics, jewellery and driftwood creations to paintings, photography, knitwear and tweed hats in The Old Creamery. It’s a great destination for anyone who is interested in the best of what’s handmade and locally-produced, and it gives you the chance to meet the producers who share the task of running the shop and market.

The Sheep’s Head Producers began their work together when they started a Sunday Market in 2011. The shop at The Old Creamery, was opened in 2012. Both are run by a pioneering group of foodies, growers, craftspeople, designers and community activists. Some of us have lived here our whole lives, others have been drawn here from the UK, continental Europe and the USA. All of us have one thing in common: our passion for creating food, plants, art and crafts that reflect the unique character of the Sheep’s Head peninsula.

The work of more than 80 rural-dwelling artists, crafters and food lovers is gathered here, and you’ll get a real sense of the area’s rich and vibrant culture when you visit.

So, come and meet our producers and browse our wares in Kilcrohane village. We hope you’ll enjoy our unique showcase of the tastes and treasures from a magical place.
