Bay View Cottages

January 2, 2014 by Dunmanus

Bay View Kilcrohane

Bay View Cottages are centrally-located in the charming coastal village of Kilcrohane on the Sheep’s Head peninsula in West Cork

Bay View cottages are three adjacent self-catering holiday cottages. Each one can accommodate up to six people, so the cluster of cottages in this lovely village is ideal for walking and diving groups, or any group gathering!

Choose a Cottage with a Sea View

Each property has a master bedroom with a sea view and en suite bathroom. There is also a twin room and a double room in each cottage. There is a family bathroom upstairs and a guest WC downstairs.

There’s a small garden to the rear of each of our Bay View holiday homes, and off-street parking is available. Dogs are welcome (by prior arrangement).

The cottages have an open plan kitchen/dining area. The patio doors open on to a small balcony that overlooks the garden and Dunmanus Bay. French doors lead from the dining area to the living room where there is an open fire. There is also a utility room with a washer and dryer.

Ideal for Group Bookings

The cottages are within walking distance of the sea and Kilcrohane village’s amenities which include two shops, a post office, pubs, a café, and restaurants.

Kilcrohane is located in the heart of the renowned Sheep’s Head Way walking and hiking trail which offer walks for all abilities. There is also a cycling trail encircling the peninsula and bikes can be hired in Kilcrohane village. The village has a children’s playground and community field, open to the public. The local pier is a good place to swim and there are several coves that are perfect for anglers.

Fresh produce and local crafts can be purchased at the Sheep’s Head Producers’ Shop. During July and August, there is a daily café at the Post Office/O’Mahonys (except Sundays).

Local Restaurants

The restaurants at The Old Creamery, Bay View Inn and Bridge View House are open from April to September, and prior reservations are a must.

Eileen’s Bar has music every Sunday evening year round.

If you’re taking a drive west from the village to the Sheep’s Head Lighthouse, be sure to stop at the White House Gallery and cafe (open all year) and the Alice West Arts Centre. A stop at Bernie’s Cupán Tae at the end of the peninsula is well worth the drive – delicious wild salmon sandwiches and homemade apple pie.

The nearest village to Kilcrohane is Ahakista. Check out Arundel’s Bar for good traditional fare, and be sure to pop into The Tin Pub. The Heron Gallery is located in Ahakista and its café (in a wonderful garden setting) is open for lunch from June to September. The village of Durrus is about 10 miles from Kilcrohane and has a good selection of restaurants and bars. Carraig Abhainn gardens in Durrus are well worth a visit.

The nearest town is Bantry which has good restaurants, a cinema, 2 leisure centres (at The Maritime and Westlodge hotels), an 18-hole golf course, a market every Friday, and a variety of shops, boutiques, and supermarkets.

Moyny Bridge Loop Walk

November 26, 2013 by Dunmanus

This gentle walk in Drimoleague will introduce you to the history and landscape that make the Sheep’s Head Way one of Ireland’s most loved walking routes.

It gives you a pleasant one and a half hour walk along the banks of the Ilen River, with some lovely views on your return journey.

Your starting point is Drimoleague Railway Yard, where you take the Quarry Road to a point where you descend into the Ilen River Gorge.

Here you take in the history of Moyny bridge, cross two more footbridges and enjoy the wooded riverbank until the walk finally draws you upwards over the ridge and back to Drimoleague via the old Millards farm yard and the slate quarries.

This is one of the three walks along the Sheep’s Head Way which is open to dogs as long as they are kept on a lead.

Time: 1.25 hours
Starting point: Drimoleague Railway Yard
Facilities: Parking
Terrain: Off-road/road.
