May 20, 2014 by Dunmanus

Arundels by the Pier Ahakista Restaurant

Arundel’s by the Pier is a family-run bar and restaurant located in an idyllic location overlooking Kitchen Cove in Ahakista

Recommended by The McKenna Guides as “One of the key instigators & players on the burgeoning food scene on the Sheep’s Head peninsula,” Arundel’s is a perfect place to relax while taking in the spectacular views of Dunmanus Bay.

Head chef Dominique Carrucci trained in some of the most spectacular places in France and Italy, and has brought his wonderful flair to Ahakista.

Arundel's by the PierFrom the beer garden on the water’s edge you can watch the fishermen bring in their catch before ordering fresh fish from the wide-ranging menu.

The Bank House

April 10, 2014 by Dunmanus

Bank House Whiddy Island

The Bank House on Whiddy Island is a great spot to enjoy a quick meal or a drink after a walk on Whiddy Island

Kathleen O’Leary has the pleasure of inviting you for a lovely meal in the Bank House where well-priced food is served in the restaurant or outside in the open air. Wine or beer is available with your meal.

Freshly-caught local prawns are a speciality in this bar and restaurant on the shores of Whiddy Island in Bantry Bay. You’ll often find local musicians playing here during the summer months.

The island is home to a Sheep’s Head walking trail and the Bantry Bay Blueway too. Whiddy is one of seven inhabited islands on West Cork’s coastline.

The view from the Bank House over Bantry Bay makes this a wonderful place to enjoy a bit to eat, either inside the bar and restaurant, or outside by the pier from which ferries run regularly to Bantry.

Ma Murphy’s Bar

February 10, 2014 by Dunmanus

If you want a genuine, untouched, unfiddled with traditional Irish pub with real Irish character and the warmest of friendly welcomes, you need look no further than Ma Murphy’s in the middle of Bantry’s main thoroughfare.

Don’t be confused by the landlord’s Welsh accent, he’s as West Cork as they come; he was born on an island in Roaring Water Bay. If you have time enough (And capacity enough!) Bill will tell you that, and many other wonderful tales.

It’s one of the most wonderful places for a night-out in the whole of West Cork.

“Ma Murphy opened her welcoming arms to us in the form of Billy’s enthusiastic greeting. The most fervent greeting was reserved for any ladies coming and going who generally received a bear hug.”

Ma Murphy’s receives many great plaudits, mainly because it has maintained its original guise. This is a credit to the previous proprietors of the bar which dates back as far as the eighteenth century, and is also very much appreciated by the local community and visitors to West Cork. Ma Murphy’s Traditional Bar oozes charm and class and is a complete manifestation of all things Irish.

When visiting West Cork, make sure you call to Ma Murphy’s traditional bar, off licence, grocery and beer garden.
Craft beers, a great range of whiskeys and coeliac-friendly bar snacks help to set this place apart.

You’ll be guaranteed a tremendous welcome and maybe even a song when you visit Ma Murphy’s.

Fish Kitchen Restaurant Bantry - baked fish with orange and herbs

The Fish Kitchen is a family-run restaurant in Bantry which serves fish, fresh from West Cork’s waters, in a modern bistro setting

Bantry Bay mussels and locally-sourced ingredients feature on the menu in this popular restaurant. Specials change on a daily basis to feature the best of the day’s catch. A selection of Irish craft beers is available, and visitors always comment on the Fish Kitchen’s friendly atmosphere and excellent service, all delivered in a cosy bistro setting.

The Fish Kitchen is a wonderful place for lunch or for a special evening out!

Fittingly, the restaurant located above Bantry’s fish vendors. The Fish Kitchen is a welcome addition to town. Everything is unfussy, from the décor to the food styles to the prices. Cupán Tae

January 13, 2014 by Dunmanus

Bernie's Cupán Tae

The Cupán Tae has been dubbed ‘the tea shop at the end of the world’, and it’s the last spot to catch a cup of tea before you walk on to the lighthouse at the end of the Sheep’s Head peninsula

We don’t meet anyone who’s visited the Sheep’s Head who hasn’t got a good word to say about the Cupán Tae. It’s an important part of every visit to the peninsula.

Bernie Tobin has been running a tea shop at Tooreen where the road ends on the Sheep’s Head peninsula for many years. The Cupán Tae began life as a prefab, and Bernie served hot drinks and homemade scones to grateful walkers. The tea shop Bernie runs there now still serves scones, legendary salmon sandwiches, and wonderful apple pie to people returning from the Lighthouse Loop Walk, or setting out on the return journey along the Sheep’s Head Way from Bantry.

At the Cupán Tae you’ll find walkers taking a well-earned rest, drivers enjoying the scenery of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, and cyclists, all gathered for a hot drop.

The views here at Tooreen are spectacular, and a walk out on the Lighthouse loop walk is highly-recommended.
